Event ideas
The hardest part of running a chapter is rarely the money. It is the blank page in September, when three organizers sit down and try to think of something to do.
So we went back through every annual report from 2014 to 2025 and pulled out what chapters actually ran, from speaker series and reading groups to imposter syndrome bingo, name pronunciation workshops, prison teaching, board game nights and departmental climate surveys. More than sixty of them, each credited to the chapter that ran it and the year it appeared in the record.
Filter by format, by who the event is for, or by what it costs. More than ten of them need essentially no budget at all.
MAP × Philosophers for Sustainability
A network of MAP organizers effecting change toward environmental sustainability, within and beyond academic philosophy.
The idea. Every chapter is encouraged to have at least one Climate Ambassador who connects local organizing to a global network focused on climate action in the profession.
What ambassadors do. Attend one virtual meeting per semester, and lead or co-lead at least one climate-related event or project each year. This may include a sustainability workshop, a blog series, an advocacy campaign, a Climate Hub session, or something no one has thought of yet.
What it costs. Nothing. Membership in both MAP and Philosophers for Sustainability is free, and the role is designed to be sustainable and enjoyable.
