Assistant Professor, Applied Ethics or Virtue Theory.
Department of Philosophy, College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences, UNC Charlotte
Tenure-track · Begins 16 August 2027 · 2-2 teaching load · Review begins 23 November 2026
The position
The Department of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning August 16, 2027. The area of specialization (AOS) is global philosophical approaches to applied ethics or virtue theory, with a preference for non-ideal approaches and for research that reaches across typical canonical divides in philosophy. The person hired would be expected to be able to teach Ethical Theory at the undergrad and graduate level. The areas of competence are open, but the ability to collaborate with other units on campus is a plus.
Standard workload for tenure line faculty is two courses per semester, at all levels from large general education classes to graduate seminars. Applicants are encouraged to address how they might collaborate across campus in their application materials.
Required qualifications
Candidates must (1) have a Ph.D. in Philosophy or a related discipline at the time of appointment; (2) provide evidence of scholarly activity appropriate for a tenure-track position in a philosophy department; and (3) provide evidence of success in teaching and mentoring a wide range of students. Finalists will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage, include, and eliminate barriers to learning for UNC Charlotte students, and how their educational approach helps increase the engagement and success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the university.
The department
Our philosophy department embodies an intertraditional approach to philosophy: we engage in work within and between philosophical traditions, aiming to build a philosophical culture where sub-disciplinary boundaries are less important than the resources traditions provide for addressing concrete practices and problems. The department offers a major and minor, including a major with a Pre-Law Concentration; a Graduate Certificate in Applied Ethics; and an M.A. in Ethics and Applied Philosophy, including a Concentration in Research and Data Ethics. We are closely affiliated with UNC Charlotte’s Center for Professional and Applied Ethics. For more on the department and its vision for intertraditionality, see philosophy.charlotte.edu.
